To support guardianship and new recreational opportunities for people with disabilities in Rensselaer County

Troy, NY- June 12th 2017- The Arc of Rensselaer County, a not-for-profit organization supporting people with disabilities in Rensselaer County has been awarded $68,500 in grants from the Trustee Management Board of NYSARC Trust Services to support The Arc of Rensselaer County’s guardianship* and recreation programs.

NYSARC Trust Services administers supplemental needs trusts (SNT) that can make dramatic improvements to the lives of people with disabilities while enabling individuals to maintain eligibility for public benefits programs, such as Medicaid and SSI. For 2017, NYSARC Trust Services is proud to fulfill its commitment to enhancing the lives of people with disabilities by awarding a total of $2,793,500 in grants to NYSARC Chapters statewide.

This year, The Arc of Rensselaer County received $53,500 to provide guardianship services for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities that would not otherwise have a legal guardian or advocate. Supported by Chapter staff and community volunteers, The Arc of Rensselaer County’s Guardianship Program currently provides guardianship supports and services to over 12 people and is assisting 2 more as a Standby or Alternate Standby guardian.

NYSARC Trust Services also awarded The Arc of Rensselaer County $15,000 to develop new recreational opportunities to enrich the lives of the more than the 100 members it serves. The Arc of Rensselaer County plans to use the recreation grant funds to let a significant amount of adults and children attend different events and places they may have never been able to experience. We hope to help those that we support participate in adventures and endeavors that encourage a happy and healthy lifestyle, once in a life time experiences and community inclusion.

Testimonials and Success Stories

In November of 2004 I broke my leg and taking care of my then 24 year old son was a huge challenge. He had multiple needs, which required me to be physically fit to manage him. My husband was working full time and couldn't take time off and my other three children were grown and out on their own. Sandy VanEck heard of my plight and organized a wonderful group of people from The Arc office and residential programs to come in and help take care of Jimmy. Sandy also arranged for grant money so people could be paid for their generosity. It was simply wonderful seeing such caring people and I made many new friends. The Arc will always have a special place in my heart.
